Ferdinand was a gunmaker, hired by the first independent government of Argentina in either England or Holland (records are not precise) by a diplomatic delegation sent to London in search of recognition of the new republic. He went to Buenos Aires in 1813 and, indeed, became the first gunsmith there. Needless to say, he had no reason to fear for lack of customers, and through the independence war and successive revolutions prospered considerably.
