Biography* 
He was just a month short of the age of 20 when he was enlisted in the Army on December 29, 1863 in Joliet, IL. He enlisted for a period of three years in the 64th Illinois Infantry, Company "G", which was better known as "Yates Sharp Shooters," and was sent to Camp Butler, IL. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on March 24, 1864 and then to the rank of Sergeant on August 10, 1864. He received a brevet promotion in the field to 2nd Lieutenant. His military service lasted until the end of the war and his unit was involved in the Atlanta Campaign (Summer of 1864) and it's many battles. The Svannah Campaign (November and December 1864) which included, among other battles, Sherman's March to the Sea and the Siege of Savannah, GA, and the Campaign of the Carolinas (January to April 1865) and the March to Washington D.C via Richmond, VA. The unit moved to Louisville, KY on June 6, 1865. He was mustered out of the Army with the rank of Seargent in Louisville, KY on July 11, 1865 along with the entire unit and was discharged at Chicago, IL on July 18, 1865.
